Εμβρυο-μητρική Ιατρική was founded in 2008 from Dr Athena Souka and Dr Athanasios Pilalis with the aim to provide high quality prenatal care and counselling to prospective parents.

Dr Athena Souka

Dr Athena Souka has graduated with honours from the Medical School of the Kapodistriakon University of Athens. She specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St Thomas’Hospital and Lewisham Hospital in London and completed her training at Alexandra University Hospital in Athens. She trained for five years in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine at King’s College Hospital in London, under the supervision of Professor Kypros Nicolaides and subsequently worked as a consultant in Fetal Medicine in the same centre of excellence.

 

As a research associate in Alexandra University Hospital she studied the first trimester diagnosis of fetal structural defects and presented her thesis in the University of Athens Medical School.

 

She has been in charge of the Department of Fetal Medicine of Attikon University Hospital for a 5-year period. The unit offered fetal medicine services to the local population, trained new doctors and served as a tertiary referral centre.

 

Since 2007 she is head of the Department of Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine of Leto Maternity Hospital. This is a private unit manned with Fetal Medicine experts. The unit has the capacity to perform fetal surgical procedures as well as innovative research.

 

Dr Souka is a holder of the Diploma in Fetal Medicine and she has produced several research publications and has presented them in local and international congresses.

Dr Athanasios Pilalis

Dr Athanasios Pilalis is a distinguished graduate of the Medical University of Patras, Greece. He specialized in Obstetrics / Gynecology at the First University Clinic of Obstetrics / Gynecology Alexandra Hospital, Athens, Greece, where he also graduated top of his class in the specialty exams. He trained for 4 years in the hospital’s Department of Ultrasound and Prenatal Screening under the supervision of Professor A.. Antsaklis.

 

Following these he trained in Fetal Medicine at the Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine at the King’s College Hospital, London, UK, under the supervision of Professor Kypros Nicolaides

 

He has been appointed as a research associate at the First University Clinic of Obstetrics / Gynecology Alexandra Hospital, where he completed his Ph.D. on the study of the flow in the uterine arteries at 11-14 weeks for prediction of preeclampsia and intrauterine growth retardation. He has also been appointed research associate, as well as university scholar and finally special Lecturer in the third University Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Attikon Hospital, Athens Greece, during 2009-2013.

 

He holds the Diploma in Fetal Medicine (Fetal Medicine Foundation, London) and the license for ultrasound examinations from the Greek Ministry of Health.

 

He has published important research work in major fields of prenatal diagnosis and screening such as diagnosis of fetal abnormalities, prediction of preterm birth and preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction and the use of three-dimensional ultrasound with published papers in all the major international  journals in the field, also serving as a reviewer for some of them.  He is frequently an invited speaker in Greek and international conferences.
