The growth scan and Doppler examination
The growth scan can take place from 24 weeks and up to the end of the pregnancy depending on the recommendations of the attending physician. The examination comprises of a series of fetal measurements to estimate the weight of the baby as well as examination of the amniotic fluid volume and the placental position. The Doppler studies examine the blood flow in the vessels of the placenta and the baby (usually the umbilical and middle cerebral artery) and give valuable information regarding the placental function and the well-being of the baby. This information is particularly important for the small babies because it can help us decide whether the baby gets enough nutrients and oxygen from the placenta. Should these tests indicate that there may be a problem, careful follow up by a maternal-fetal medicine expert is important.
